VIDIRO’s ‘Talent Radar’ Reveals YouTube Stars of the Future
Innovate UK contest winners trial pioneering new tech with SYCO Entertainment
Start-up’s talent-spotting algorithm discovers the next Zoella or Justin Bieber
London, UK - 12 February 2015: VIDIRO Analytics has today announced the launch of a portfolio of talent scouting social media tools following a successful commercial trial with SYCO Entertainment.
The video analytics start-up was a 2014 winner of IC tomorrow’s Cross-Sector Innovation Digital Challenge: ‘Digital Analytics for Talent Scouting’, run by the UK Government’s innovation agency, Innovate UK. Over the last six months, it has developed the VIDIRO Talent Radar, an advanced data-driven solution for identifying the ‘next big thing’ on YouTube. The test period culminated in a successful trial with contest challenge partners SYCO and their production partners.
Simon Factor, VIDIRO’s CEO, said: “VIDIRO’s core technology sits at the melting point between online video and social media, the two hottest categories in digital marketing for many media companies and brands. The key innovation of this research and development project was the creation of advanced new algorithms for our data platform, so that it is able to categorise in real-time millions of individual videos on YouTube and present its insights back to the client. This core technology can also be deployed by brand managers and ad buyers to run more effective YouTube campaigns.”
With 300 hours of video uploaded every minute to YouTube, the project was not without technical challenges of its own. Early detection of new, potentially high-performing videos before they trend is the equivalent of “finding a needle in a very large and constantly growing haystack”, Factor remarks.
VIDIRO is now able to identify what each video is about and how it spreads across social media. It can also measure audience engagement using software which goes beyond simple keyword search and dives into what VIDIRO terms ‘campaign critical data’, identifying category influencers, for example.

The ethos of the Cross-Sector Innovation Digital Challenge was to enable the winners to develop specific solutions with industry partners, trial them with support from those partners and to keep the IP they developed in the process.
